Who can participate?
EVERYONE can participate in the Home Harvest Farms Challenge even if you don’t own any HHF planters. We encourage you to grow your produce in the garden or in planters made out of any material that you choose. Consider insanely creative alternatives like Bioropes or Window Farms. Try to keep the area of your garden close to the area of the HHF planters so that everyone is working within roughly the same parameters. A four foot (122cm) wide Home Harvest Farms planter consists of 3 stainless steel troughs whose dimensions are 48 inches (122cm) long by 10 inches (25cm) deep by 6 inches (15cm) wide. This can easily be understood by looking at the photos on our website. Register here and begin growing today!
Let people know how it’s going
Start a blog, Tweet about your garden and use the Home Harvest Farms Forum or Village Vancouver website to share your insights, successes and challenges. It’s a fantastic way to meet interesting people and to develop your gardening skills and to show off what you’re doing well.
When does the 500 days start?
It’s okay to begin counting the 500 days at any time. Start from seed or from plant starts that you’ve bought from a nursery or sourced elsewhere. If you’ve recorded, for example, 550 days of data, pick the 500 consecutive days that give you the highest yield.
If you can get to $500 worth of produce in less than 500 days then let other participants know how you’ve managed to do this so that they can learn from your success.
Keep it Organic
Use compost, worms, natural growth supporters; please stay away from chemical and non-organic pesticides. The best gardeners don’t need chemicals. Permaculture resources abound with valuable information about how to plan and to grow food intensively and organically using wisdom accrued from all over the world over thousands of years.
